font-weight:bold; ">Professor the Lord Sandy Trees<br />BVM&S PhD MRCVS<br /></span><span style="font-size:13px; "><br /></span><span style="font-size:15px; ">Professor the Lord Trees graduated as a veterinary surgeon in 1969 from Edinburgh University. Following a year in mixed general practice, he completed a PhD on bovine babesiosis, and then worked in the pharmaceutical industry.<br /><br />In 1980 Lord Trees was appointed Lecturer in Veterinary Parasitology at the University of Liverpool, was appointed Professor of Veterinary Parasitology in 1994 and went on to become Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science from 2001-2008. His research has been funded by over &pound;15m of external grants and produced over 170 scientific papers. He retired from the University of Liverpool in 2011.<br /><br />He was a council member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) from 2000-2015 and president of the RCVS in 2009-2010. Prior to this, he has held academic posts at the Universities of York, Heriot-Watt, Manchester and Keele.<br /></span><span style="font-size:15px; "><br /></span><span style="font-size:15px; ">He has wide experience of supporting and leading educational activities, as well as having a strong research record (over 100 papers). His teaching has been recognised by a number of awards, including his appointment as a National Teaching Fellow in 2005, and he is a member of the TEF Panel.<br /></span><span style="font-size:15px; "><br /></span><span style="font-size:15px; ">His research expertise is in medicinal chemistry (>100 papers), especially the synthesis of biologically active heterocycles and the development of drug delivery systems, for which he has attracted significant funding (ca &pound;4M).<br /></span><span style="font-size:15px; "><br /></span><span style="font-size:15px; ">He is a passionate supporter of widening access and participation in HE, and his outreach activities and commitment to sharing science with the wider community led to him receiving the BSA Lord Kelvin Award in 1999. In this role he supports the Vice-Chancellor in setting the academic direction of the University, provides strategic leadership and champions the enhancement of learning and teaching throughout the academic and student community.<br /><br />Before joining the University of Liverpool, Gavin spent his academic career at Lancaster University in a number of senior roles. As Dean of Undergraduate Studies his focus was on enhancing the quality of learning and teaching, and included the delivery of a number of IT initiatives to underpin technology-enhanced learning and support the student experience. He also spent six years as Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Health and Medicine, leading on resource planning and the development of international partnerships.<br /><br />Gavin has a first degree in chemistry and a PhD in connective tissue biochemistry.
